‘Quadfather’ Norfolk defends Paralympic title

Peter Norfolk successfully defended his Paralympic title in the quad singles final with a comprehensive victory at the Olympic Green Tennis Centre in Beijing.
The 47-year-old, nicknamed “The Quadfather”, overcame Johan Andersson of Sweden in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in just over one hour on centre court, serving six aces.
The gold adds to the bronze Norfolk had already picked up in the quad doubles with partner Jamie Burdekin.
Norfolk took the first set in only 30 minutes, before storming to a 4-0 lead in the second. He then lost his serve, but battled back to earn two match points at 5-2, sealing the win with a crisp backhand.
“The atmosphere out there was the best I’ve ever played in. It was stirring,” said Norfolk. “The enthusiasm of the crowd was fantastic and I loved it.”
He vowed to return to defend his title in London in four years time.
“I’m going to be there. If this is what it’s like in China, imagine what it will be like in London. I can’t wait.”
