Weir light shines again

David Weir was once again the shining light among Great Britain’s athletes on the track as he completed another gold medal double at the Paralympic World Cup.
The four-time London Marathon winner was in devastating form in the T54 category, first decimating the field at the bell in the 1500m, and later following up with another win in the closing 400m event.
Speaking to Disability Now after his win in the 1500m, Weir said that he was still working on building up his training after being struck down by glandular fever just before the world championships in Osaka last year.
Weir said he achieved his aim of controlling the pace from the off. “I tried to go off fast and slow it down, then just hammer it after because I know if I have people behind that are slower than I am then I can get away,” he said.
In the women’s T54, Shelly Woods came a disappointing fifth in the 1500m, but came back to take bronze later in the day in a strong 800m.
Rising sprint star Ian Jones picked up gold in the T44 400m and bronze in the 100m.
Elsewhere, in what was a largely weakened athletics field from previous years, there were medals for Chris Martin in the seated discus event, and for Athens silver medallist Dan West in the seated shot put.
