Q&A: Gordon Reid

In the sixth of our Paralympics profiles in the run-up to Beijing, we put our questions to 16-year-old wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid

Gordon ReidHow did you first get involved in disability sport?

I first got involved when I was 13, six months after the onset of my condition (transverse myelitis). I wanted to keep playing sport so I looked into wheelchair tennis at a local club in Glasgow.

What is your biggest sporting achievement?
Winning with the GB Juniors at the World Team Cup 07 and individually myself winning the Junior Masters Singles in 08.

What are your ambitions for Beijing and beyond?
I’m hoping to get selected and then to go out there and play well and hopefully challenge some of the top guys. One of my long-term goals is to do well at the London Paralympics 2012.

Who are your sporting heroes?
David Hall of Australia (Paralympic tennis champion, Sydney 2000) and James Blake (world top ten-ranked American tennis star).

Do you think the GB team is in good shape for the Beijing games, and beyond that, London?
Yes, because we have some good young players who can still improve and become even better for London.

Who is your tip to be the next star of GB Paralympic sport?
My tip is Jamie Burdekin, one of our quad players.
