US campaigners oppose McCain over act

ADAPTMore than 20 protesters from the US campaigning disability rights group ADAPT were arrested after occupying the offices of Republican presidential candidate John McCain in Washington, DC.

The group was protesting because Senator McCain opposes the Community Choice Act, which would force states to allow people eligible for Medicaid (the US government healthcare programme) to spend the money on home- or community-based services instead of nursing homes (Disability Now May, World View).

One deaf activist was apparently forced to the ground by police when she didn’t respond to an officer’s instructions.

Members of ADAPT were in the city to mark the organisation’s 25th anniversary.
