ODI gets new disabled director

Shaw CooperBy Cathy Reay

Tim Cooper, who is profoundly deaf, has been appointed new director at the government’s Office for Disability Issues (ODI), part of the Department for Work and Pensions.

Mr Cooper has worked in disability issues for the past 25 years, most recently as managing director of The Shaw Trust’s Work and Independence Division.

Speaking to Disability Now, Mr Cooper said that he was very excited by the challenge this role has to offer. He said: The ODI has lots to offer in helping the government and the disabled community, particularly things like Equality 2025.”

“In my role I want to focus on building an outward-facing relationship between the government and the disabled community. I want to work on pulling policy through to implementation, particularly around work around Right to Control [a new legislation offering disabled people more control over personal choice].”

Mr Cooper said that he hoped his background in the voluntary sector along with personal experience of having a disability will bring something to his new position.

He added: ”There is also this huge enthusiasm and a sense of real commitment from the ODI staff and I think that’s going to make a great basis for our work.”

Minister for Disabled People Jonathan Shaw said: “I am looking forward to working with Tim, helping to achieve equal rights and opportunities for disabled people. He brings to the post a great deal of experience and expertise, which will no doubt stand the ODI in good stead. I know he will do a great job."

Mr Cooper will take up the post in September, replacing acting director Stephen Martin.
