LCD consults on job cuts

By Sunil Peck

wheelchairLeonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) is set to cut at least 100 jobs according to reports.

But a spokesman for the charity told Disability Now that he had no figure for the number of posts under threat and the number of disabled employees who would be affected. He confirmed that cuts would not affect service delivery staff. He denied any link between the recession and the move to cut jobs and said that restructuring was part of a strategy to meet the changing needs and aspirations of disabled people.

As part of a restructuring programme, known as The Way Ahead, Leonard Cheshire launched a 90 day consultation process with employees and its staff association on April 2.

Leonard Cheshire Disability Chief Executive Eric Prescott said that the restructuring would allow the charity to do more to achieving a society with more rights and independence for disabled people.  He said:

“The Way Ahead is very much a part of that long-term vision. It builds on the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers and is a response to
the changing needs and aspirations of disabled people and enabling them to improve the quality of their lives."

A Leonard Cheshire manager involved in service delivery told Disability Now that she was confident that cuts would not affect service delivery now or in the future.
