City boss airlifted to hospital after speed record bid crash

By Cathy Reay

David EdwardsThe disabled boss of a leading City insurance firm had to be airlifted to hospital after a high-speed crash while he was attempting to break a number of UK land-speed records.

David Edwards, director of London Special Risks insurance brokers, was believed to be travelling at almost 200mph when his adapted Lola T222 crashed last Wednesday on a test track in Essex.

Mr Edwards was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he was treated for head injuries, two broken arms and a broken leg.

The record bids were aimed at raising awareness of the charity Aspire, which works with people who have spinal injuries.

A spokeswoman for his “Mission: It’s Possible” record attempts, Amanda Goodchild, said Mr Edwards was “recovering really well”.

She said: “He wanted to set records as a disabled person; to inspire people.

“Although we’re still waiting to hear, I have a good feeling he may still have set records.”

Mr Edwards has continued his lifelong hobby of racing cars since losing the use of his legs 15 years ago in a road accident.
