Millions more for disabled troops

HeadleyThe Ministry of Defence has announced extra funding for the medical centre at Headley Court, which provides treatment for troops disabled on active service.

In 2007, the armed forces' surgeon general commissioned a review of defence rehabilitation services to ensure that high standards of care can be maintained in the future.

The new funding is worth £24 million over the next four years.

Staff at Headley Court, near Epsom, provide treatment which includes making and fitting prosthetic limbs, treating brain injuries and providing rehabilitation support.

Announcing the investment, defence secretary Des Browne said the money would be used to increase the number of beds available for in-patient care, improving the work done by the prosthetic workshops and enhancing MRI and X-ray facilities.
