Young Ian analysis

Schoolboy Wesley Nelson has appeared in several plays and on television in Doctors and Casualty. But he received his big break as the young Ian Dury in the biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and hopes it will catapult him into more roles on the stage, screen and radio. He tells us how he might spend time drawing as well as playing his all-time hero

Wesley NelsonWhat’s the best thing about being disabled?
My Blue Badge. When I go to London I can park closer to an audition or theatre without having to pay.

What makes you angry?
Everything grinding to a halt in this country when it snows.

What’s the funniest thing anyone’s ever said to you about your impairment?
So far, nobody’s said anything funny about my impairment.

If you were Prime Minister what one thing would you do to improve things for disabled people?
Improve access to theatres and cinemas.

What’s the one thing that could be invented to make your life as a disabled person better?
A little pencil where I could press the top and it would turn into a walking stick when I needed to use it.

What do you most like about acting?
Getting to meet and have fun with all the other actors and crew during a run.

What do you not like about acting?
I don’t know, nothing really, I don’t mind the long hours and I’m good at learning lines too.

Who’s your favourite disabled person ever?
Ian Dury! I love his music and he was a great inspiration.

Do you have any special or hidden talents?
I’m not bad at drawing, I like that. I draw when I’m waiting around in the theatre. I don’t usually get to keep what I draw, my mother throws my pictures away. But it helps me relax.

How would you sum yourself up in ten words or fewer?
I’m an outgoing, bubbly, happy-go-lucky person.
